What is the role of cobalt in cemented carbide process?

Cemented carbide has high hardness, wear resistance and elastic modulus, especially at high temperature. It plays an important role in modern tool materials, wear-resistant materials, high temperature and corrosion-resistant materials. Co bonded C cemented carbide is widely used in industry as cutting tool material. Because Co has good wettability and adhesion to WC, tic and other hard phases, and the solubility of WC, tic and other hard phases in CO is large, the cemented carbide bonded by CO has a series of excellent properties such as high strength, high hardness and high wear resistance.

However, due to the high price of cobalt and the scarcity of resources, people have been studying the substitutes of cobalt. The common substitutes are nickel and iron. The cemented carbide with iron powder as binder usually has low mechanical strength. When pure nickel is used as cemented carbide bonding phase, the physical and mechanical properties of the obtained cemented carbide are not as good as those of cobalt as binder, and the process control is difficult.

Cobalt acts as a bonding metal in cemented carbide. The bonding metal serves the impact resistance toughness of cemented carbide through its plastic deformation ability at room temperature. Cemented carbide is formed by liquid phase sintering. The wetting of bonding metal to hard phase plays a very important role in obtaining good sintered products. Cobalt and nickel become the universal binder of cemented carbide. More than 90% of cemented carbide uses metal drill as binder. Cobalt has an important impact on cemented carbide production.

Cemented carbide is composed of hard carbide and soft bonding metal. Carbide provides load-bearing capacity and wear resistance for the alloy, and bonding metal endows cemented carbide with impact toughness through its plastic deformation ability at room temperature. Cemented carbide is sintered by liquid phase. The wetting of cemented carbide by bonding metal plays a very important role in obtaining good sintered products.

Cobalt high-function alloy steel and high-quality alloy are mostly used in aerospace industry, such as aircraft engine and aircraft skeleton. tungsten cobalt cemented carbide series are used for cutting tool tips and mining equipment with high hardness surfaces,as well as durable surgical instruments Some powerful permanent magnets are also made of cobalt alloy.

The binder in cemented carbide can give cemented carbide the required plastic toughness and make it into parts at a temperature far lower than the melting point of high melting cemented carbide. The best binder should be able to completely wet the high melting point cemented carbide; The solubility of cemented carbide is closely related to temperature; It is not easy to form harmful third phase; It has good compatibility with cemented carbide in physical, chemical, thermal and mechanical properties, so that cemented carbide composites can obtain the required plastic toughness. Iron, cobalt and nickel have similar properties and can meet the above requirements to some extent.
