Hard alloy cutting tools are designed to withstand extreme conditions and maintain their cutting edge. The hardness of these tools varies depending on the material used:

1. High-Speed Steel (HSS):

- HSS cutting tools have a hardness of about 65 HRC .

2. Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN):

- CBN cutting tools possess excellent hot hardness and can be used at very high cutting speeds. CBN maintains hardness even at elevated temperatures, significantly higher than other materials .

3. Hardened Steels:

- Hardened steel cutting tools typically have a hardness ranging from 45 to 65 HRC, depending on their specific composition and heat treatment .

4. Carbide Tools:

- Carbide cutting tools are harder than HSS and are used for machining hard materials. They are effective in the hardness range of 45 HRC and above, often in the 50 HRC zone and higher .

These materials are selected for their ability to maintain hardness and cutting efficiency under high stress and temperature conditions during machining processes.
