How to test the hardness of hard alloys?

Detecting the hardness of hard alloys involves several standardized testing methods. Here are the primary methods used:

1. Brinell Hardness Test:

A steel or carbide ball is pressed into the material with a specific force. The diameter of the indentation left is measured to determine hardness. This method is effective for materials with a coarse or uneven structure .

2. Rockwell Hardness Test:

This test uses a diamond cone or a hard steel ball to indent the surface of the material. The depth of the indentation under a major load is measured. It provides a direct hardness number on a specific scale (e.g., Rockwell C for hard alloys) .

3. Vickers Hardness Test:

A diamond pyramid is pressed into the material at a specific force, and the size of the indentation is measured. This method is suitable for all types of metals and provides precise measurements .

4. Knoop Hardness Test:

Similar to the Vickers test but uses an elongated diamond indenter. It is used for brittle materials and thin sections, providing a very precise hardness measurement .

Each method has its advantages depending on the material type and the specific requirements of the hardness measurement .
