Distinguishing hard alloys can be done through several methods:

1. Visual Inspection:

   - High-quality hard alloys usually have a smooth surface without visible pores or cracks. The alloy particles should be uniform and consistent in size.

2. Hardness Testing:

   - Hard alloys have very high hardness, often measured using a hardness tester. Typically, the hardness of hard alloys is above HRA 85 .

3. Density Testing:

   - Hard alloys are very dense, usually ranging between 14 to 15 g/cm³. Density can be calculated by measuring the weight and volume .

4. Chemical Composition Analysis:

   - Using techniques like X-ray fluorescence (XRF) or chemical analysis to detect the primary components of hard alloys, such as tungsten carbide (WC) and cobalt (Co) .

5. Microstructure Examination:

   - Inspecting the microstructure of hard alloys under a microscope. High-quality hard alloys should have finely and evenly distributed carbide particles.

6. Magnetic Testing:

   - Binding metals in hard alloys like cobalt are magnetic. This can be used as an initial identification method.

7. Heat Treatment Marks:

   - Quality hard alloys undergo heat treatment during production. The surface of treated hard alloys may have specific heat treatment marks that can help in identification.
